Jun.-Prof. Dr. Barbara Henning
History of Islam in the Eastern Mediterranean
In my research, I focus on Ottoman-Kurdish history and the history of the Arab provinces of the Ottoman Empire from the 16th to the 20th century. My research interests include the experience of imperial elites, the fields of identity and memory politics, as well as conceptual history and the history of knowledge. I am particularly curious about the making of social boundaries in the Ottoman context and look at ideas and practices that come to play when dealing with differences and hierarchies in Ottoman society.
I welcome suggestions for dissertation projects relating to these research interests. An example topic can be found here.
